Why I only take two projects at a time

Saying no to work felt reckless the first year. Now it’s the reason clients come back.

For my first year of freelancing I said yes to everything. At one point I had six projects open, and every one of them was a little bit late.

The maths of switching

Every time I switched between projects I lost half an hour getting back into it: rereading notes, reopening files, remembering what the client said on Tuesday. With six projects that was most of a day each week, gone.

What two projects looks like

One project in design, one in build. Mornings go to the one that needs more thinking, afternoons to the other. Calls happen on Tuesdays and Thursdays so the other days stay quiet.

It means I’m sometimes booked two or three months ahead, which is why the availability date sits at the top of every page on this site. Most clients would rather wait a few weeks than get half of my attention.
