What a £5,000 website actually includes

Where the money goes on a typical small business site, from the first call to the handover.

An open sketchbook full of small pencil drawings, with a pencil resting on it

Most of my enquiries ask the same thing in different words: what do I get for the money? So here is a typical small business site of about six pages, broken down the way I’d quote it.

Before any design: about a day and a half

A call, a short questionnaire and a morning looking at your current site, your competitors and your analytics if you have them. Out of that comes a one-page plan: who the site is for, what they need to do and how we’ll know it’s working.

Design: three to four days

The home page first, at desktop and phone size, then the rest. You get two rounds of changes on each page. Most clients use one and a half.

Build: four to five days

Everything is built in a tool you can edit yourself, with the CMS set up for the things that change: news, team, projects, prices. I test it on real phones, not just a resized browser window.

Launch and handover: a day

Domain, redirects from your old pages, search titles, a short video showing you how to edit everything, and a check-in call a month later. At £450 a day, that comes to roughly £5,000.
