A year of four-day weeks

What happened when I stopped working Fridays: the good, the awkward and the numbers.

An open monthly planner on a wooden desk

Last January I stopped working on Fridays. A year later, here is what changed.

I earned about the same

I put my day rate up from £400 to £450 and stopped doing small jobs that took longer to quote than to do. Income for the year ended within 4% of the year before.

Clients mostly didn’t notice

I told every client at the start of their project. Two asked for Friday launches, and we moved them to Thursdays. Nobody minded.

Work got better

The surprise was the quality. With a long weekend to think, I came back on Mondays with better ideas than I ever had after a seven-day week.
